Black Hole Vase, Orrefors in collaboration with Claesson Koivisto Rune

Orrefors Stories

26.01.12

This collaboration bridges a century of Swedish innovation. In 1925, Orrefors achieved its international breakthrough at the Paris World Expo. One hundred years later, at Expo Osaka, the same values continue to resonate: innovation, functionality, craftsmanship, timeless aesthetics, and sustainable quality. The Black Hole Vase by Orrefors in collaboration with Claesson Koivisto Rune was exhibited at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan and later in Tokyo, Japan at DesignArt Tokyo during fall 2025.

The process is coloured, sand-cast, ground and polished glass - all at Kosta Glassworks in Småland, Sweden. The challenge being the volume and tapered solidity, making time critical: Both the limited time-span allowed for pouring the cast, and the very long and slow time-span needed for cooling.

Together, Orrefors and Claesson Koivisto Rune, are pushing the boundaries of what is possible to craft: Geometrical, pure and solid, Black Hole Vase challenges the notion of what a vase should be. Large (60cm diameter) and heavy – it rests firmly, yet appears floating. Dark, black, but still with some transparency to make its inner reservoir visible. The flowers are not only kept watered and held up, but are also enhanced by their reflection in the flat surround.

”Dark, black, yet transparent enough to glimpse within — The Black Hole Vase connects the history of human cultural evolution with the spirit of future discovery.”

– Claesson Koivisto Rune
